Symptoms

Symptoms and References

People with social anxiety disorder usually experience significant emotional distress in the following situations:

Being introduced to other people

Being teased or criticized

Being the centre of attention

Being watched while doing something

Meeting people in authority ("important people")

Most social encounters, especially with strangers

Going around the room (or table) in a circle and having to say something

Interpersonal relationships, whether friendships or romantic

This list is certainly not a complete list of symptoms -- other feelings have been associated with social anxiety as well.

Hi Peter
Just a note of thanks to you from M and myself . We have found the 15 wk course really helpful and especially so as we have gone through the various hand-outs together. We certainly see it as a basis for continuing to read over the affirmations which we are gradually beginning to memorise and they seem to "pop up" whenever we find ourselves in a socially anxious provoking situation. Certainly the course has enabled us to rationalise our presumed fears and we feel more confident for the future. D.

Hi Peter,
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the three months you took us
through the Social Anxiety course - you clearly personally care about
our individual progress.

With time to reflect I realise I am living the first half of the
course ... walking around I feel differently about myself and the
world around me, more sure of myself and comfortable - a lot of things
are coming together from both the course and my own personal
development. I've just come back from holiday, and despite being the
only one on my own in a group of 25, at no point did I feel anxious
and even felt at home after the first day. After a while those that I
didn't get on with I didn't worry about either.

I will continue to go through the material but would very much be
interested in rejoining the second half of the course later in the
year to really get that to sink in as well - its such a lot of
material, even spread over three months. I retested myself on Martin
Seligman's Optimism Test - both a year before and just before the
course I was -2 (very pessimistic) - post SA course I am now a 3
(average), proving that it has made a real difference to my life.

I look forward to being in touch soon,
N.
